Compute Clusters—Building Blocks of the Public Cloud,
This presentation and discussion will cover the architecture of compute clusters, long used to aggregate power of two to thousands of computers together. He will discuss what compute clusters are used for, cluster fabrics, cluster storage, management, handling node and fabric failures, the impact of virtual machines and containers (Docker, etc.), and their use in the public cloud will be covered. Examples of clusters in private and public use will be presented. Views of live scientific, engineering, and general purpose clusters will be shown.
Jeff Marraccini has been with Altair Engineering for 18 years in various IT roles. He manages a world-wide team taking care of computing, network, and related services for 2,200 staff across more than 40 sites. His team manages many computing clusters based on Linux distributions and Windows Server along with several storage back-ends.
