SSL Certificates…

Oh the Places UNIX’ll Go!

December 8th 2015 - MUG Meeting

Regular MUG Meeting

We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.

Topics Include:

SSL Certificates… What are they, how do you create them and why would you want to?

This month we’ll dig in and explain what certificates are and using the incredible power of the OpenSSL tool set, we’ll show you how you can create, sign, inspect and test your own certificates.

Wondering what it means to have your certificate self-signed, signed with your own Certificate Authority (CA) or signed by a public CA? We’ll cover that too.

Once we’ve created a certificate, we’ll configure an Apache web server so we can demonstrate how a browser interacts with a secure web server.

This should be a fun, interactive, and informative presentation for anyone who needs to work with or has worked with SSL certificates. With more and more sites requiring SSL it's more important than ever to get your SSL configuration right

About the presenter:

Jim McQuillan has been using UNIX and Linux while developing applications in the healthcare industry for over 30 years. In addition to his day job, Jim has been involved with MUG since 1986 and has also been very active in the world of open source where he founded and leads the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP.org).

Oh the places UNIX'll go!

In this light-hearted and humorous presentation we'll take a look at UNIX from its humble beginnings on PDP series machines to the various places UNIX and Linux shows up in the world (and beyond). It's a reminder of how far UNIX has come and where we can go from here.

About the presenter:

Craig Maloney writes these event postings for MUG and can say any ol' bollocks he wants without having anyone to proofread them. By day he works with computers and at night he plays with older computers.

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner at Red Lobster in Novi after the meeting.
