Everything you wanted to know about data center design (but did not know who to ask) (February 14th, 2017 MUG Meeting)

February 14th 2017 - MUG Meeting

Regular MUG Meeting

We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.

Topics Include:

Everything you wanted to know about data center design (but did not know who to ask)

Data Centers have been around as long as we have had computing. During the different decades in the evolution of the computer, various soothsayers have predicted the death of the center, citing client-server computing, personal computing, etc. as indicators. As we all know forecasting in this industry is hazardous at best.

Sharan Kalwani will speak about what goes into data centers and will resolve several of the questions about data centers: What is a data center? How is data center different from any other commercial building?  What is involved in a data center design? What are the future trends in data center design? What is the technology behind them? How does this relate to all this stuff I keep hearing about the Cloud? These topics will be addressed during this informative presentation.

Sharan writes: "If anyone tells you that mobile and tablet computing will sunset data centers well they are not only wrong (and flirting with alternative facts), as these technologies actually depend on enormous data (aka cloud) centers!"

Sharan Kalwani - our Emeritus board member, is a long time UNIX user and enthusiastic trainer of many technologies including open source.  He was one of the founding member of the Michigan!/usr/group (mug.org) way back in circa 1985 ~ 1986.  Sharan has expertise in many areas, but he is specially fond of High Performance Computing. He has worked in many domains such as: Engineering, Biomedical research, University/Academic computing, US Government, Theoretical & Particle Physics, in fact everything else except Wall Street finance type work.

Sharan's earliest exposure to computing took place with punched cards, paper tape, assembly language and 8-bit gear with front panel switches. He is very active in many a technological fronts user group, is a senior member of ACM, IEEE and USENIX.
He also runs a discussion group on LinkedIn: 'Innovatve uses of HPC'. His twitter handle is @skalwani.

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner at Red Lobster in Novi after the meeting.
