June 13 2017 Regular MUG Meeting

June 13 2017 - MUG Meeting

Regular MUG Meeting

We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.

Topics Include:

PostgreSQL Replication and Tablespaces

PostgreSQL is one of the shining examples of what an Open source project can be.  It's an enterprise level relational database management system (RDBMS) that is in use by millions of people all over the world; from small projects consisting of a few megabytes of data to large corporations with terabytes of data to store.

At the June MUG meeting, Jim McQuillan will be discussing 2 interesting and important features of the PostgreSQL database:

  •  Replication - The use of redundant resources to improve reliability, fault-tolerance, or performance.
  •  Tablespaces - Controlling the locations within the filesystem where the files representing the database objects are stored.

Of the two topics, replication is by far the more complicated so we'll be spending most of the time talking about that.  In particular, we'll show how to setup and use streaming replication available in PostgreSQL 9.x to provide high availability and load balancing.  We'll also peek into the new features that are proposed for PostgreSQL 10.0 that is currently in beta release.

Jim McQuillan has been working professionally in Healthcare IT in the Detroit area for over 30 years and with PostgreSQL for over 15 years. He's been actively involved in the world of Linux and Open source and is the founder of the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP.org).

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner after the meeting.
