October 8th, 2019 – MUG Meeting
October 8 2019 - MUG Meeting
We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.
Topics Include:
Gitlab
Managing programming projects can be a daunting task. Keeping track of issues is enough of a challenge, but also keeping track of who can commit and merge code, who can download the code, and even who can access the code in the first place. The default for most projects is Github, but up until recently you couldn't create a private repo in Github without paying them for the privilege. And then if you want to have Kanban boards and continuous integration / deployment you'll have to either figure that out on your own or pay someone else to integrate that for you. And what if you're required to self-host your own solution? What then?
What if there were an alternative to Github for managing both open source and closed source projects? There is an alternative to Github called Gitlab. Wolf will demonstrate how to install, administer, and use GitLab: a GitHub-like server for individuals, teams, or communities. We’ll hit all the high points including keeping GitLab up-to-date, user permissions, creating and sharing repos, issue management, Trello-like boards, integrations (hooks), and continuous integration/continuous deployment.
Wolf has been a software engineer for over 40 years and has spoken on Open Source related topics around the world. He's worked on such varied projects as Mozilla, Final Cut Pro, the Newton, and the SoundDroid. He currently works on K-12 learning software at Cambium Learning Group in Ann Arbor, MI.
Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner at the Buddy's Pizza in Novi (44225 W 12 Mile Road, Novi, MI 48377) after the meeting.
