Regular MUG Meeting

We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.

Topics Include:

Twenty Years in Jail: FreeBSD's Jails, Then and Now

Jails started as a limited virtualization system, but over the last two years they've become more and more powerful. This talk takes you through what modern jails can do, discarding the limits of what they were and demonstrating what they can be today.

Jails started as a limited virtualization system, but over the last two years they've become more and more powerful. This talk takes you through what modern jails can do, discarding the limits of what they were and demonstrating what they can be today.

We'll cover jails using the base system and the new iocage toolkit, discussing:

  •     jails as VMs
  •     configuring the jail host
  •     properties and parameters
  •     jail management
  •     packages and upgrades
  •     base jails
  •     virtual networking with VNET
  •     firewalls in jails
  •     jails in jails
  •     resource restrictions

You'll leave with an understanding of what modern jails can and cannot do, and hints for future development.

Michael W. Lucas (MWL) is the author of over thirty books and has been using Unix since the late 1980s. His most recent titles include "FreeBSD Mastery: Jails",  "Absolute FreeBSD 3rd ed.", "SSH Mastery, 2nd ed," "FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS," and the novel "git commit murder." Five years ago, he talked to us about OpenBSD and nearly separated poor Brian's shoulder. We make no promises as to Brian's safety tonight. MWL's writing may be found over at https://www.mwl.io

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner at the Buddy's Pizza in Novi (44225 W 12 Mile Road, Novi, MI 48377) after the meeting.
