<<O>>  Difference Topic WebHome (r1.83 - 10 Mar 2010 - DuaneBrown)

Welcome to the home of the Michigan!/usr/group

We are the oldest Unix(tm) based user group in the Detroit area. We've been around since 1986. But, that doesn't mean that we are old farts. (well, some of us are). We've got lots of members, and we cover all kinds of Unix and Linux related topics at our monthly meetings.

First Topic: zsh - Rick Harding

From Wikipedia: "The Z shell (zsh) is a Unix shell that can be used as an interactive login shell and as a powerful command interpreter for shell scripting. Zsh can be thought of as an extended Bourne shell with a large number of improvements, including some features of bash, ksh, and tcsh."

This month, MUG's own Rick Harding will be showing us all kinds of cool features in what has become his favorite shell.

Main Topic: LMMS - Linux Multi-Media Studio

While prepping for a talk about what he used to create music under Linux, Craig fired up a program that he hadn't used in years. What he saw blew his little mind, and now he's on a rampage to share his findings. That program is LMMS, and it will hopefully blow your mind in this presentation.

LMMS is a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL StudioŽ, which allow you to produce music with your computer. This includes the creation of melodies and beats, the synthesis and mixing of sounds, and arranging of samples. You can have fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more; all in a user-friendly and modern interface.

MUG member Craig Maloney will be giving us a thoroughly entertaining and informative presentation on the LMMS project.

Command of the month: ps

In this month's Unix Command Line session, Duane Brown will tell us how he uses ps and seek insights into how you use it. ( rescheduled from last month due to time constraints )

Everything Else
As usual we'll discuss any current happenings in the Linux community, have our book giveaway, and plan on some dinner after the meeting where you can hammer our speakers with the hard hitting questions they deserve.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks.

Main Topic: Open Data

Our speaker is: David J. Scholl

The software wars are not over, ...

but we are in the transition from GandhiCon 3 to GandhiCon 4, and the outcome is a forgone conclusion. Microsoft is flailing, desperately trying to patch the leaks that let more and more air out of its business model, and appears no longer even able to buy innovative companies. Oracle is battling with all the considerable energy that their CEO can bring to bear, but in buying Sun and MySQL they are merely building their own Maginot Line of relational databases, and new database technology is making an end run around it. Meanwhile, the cost per terabyte of data storage continues to drop, with no fundamental physical limits in sight. People all over the world are generating data of vast scope and considerable value, from Facebook pages, to questions and answers on StackOverflow, to forum postings, to internet searches, blogs, comments on blogs, wikis, tweets, and whatever comes next. In addition to these online conversations, there are coordinated efforts to build information storehouses online, such as Wikipedia, arxiv.org and Open Street Map. Who owns this information, who controls access to it, who can use it for what purposes?

The growing, highly decentralized, Open Data movement is hoping to do for data what RMS did for software. Data is the new software, Google is the new Microsoft, and we are back to GandhiCon 1.

Secondary Topic: OpenPandora

Our presenter is: Scott Smith

OpenPandora is a mixture between a PC and a gaming console. That's why it has gaming controls (Buttons, DPad and analogue nubs). It is fast enough to emulate many other systems, run a full desktop, access the internet via FireFox and play games such as Quake3. However, it is not as big as a netbook. Believe it or not, it will fit in your pocket. It's a bit bigger than the Nintendo DS. The screen is an impressive 800*480 resolution LCD and the battery life is a sensational 10+ hours.

Scott is involved with the project, porting applications, helping to develop the operating system and testing hardware. He'll be here to give us an overview of the project.

Command of the month: "nice"

Craig Maloney will be giving a quick presentation on the nice utility titled: Naughty or Nice. Craig has given us many awesome presentations and this one should be lots of fun.

Everything Else
As usual we'll discuss any current happenings in the Linux community, have our book giveaway, and plan on some dinner after the meeting where you can hammer our speakers with the hard hitting questions they deserve.

We are going to do a different kind of meeting this month, the UNMEETING, in the style of O'Reilly's Foo Camp or Unconference as it is also called. This will be a loosely organized series of simultaneous break out sessions on whatever the people in attendance decide.

Mug member and seasoned Unconference organizer, Mark Ramm, will be on hand to lead us through how this type of meeting works. In his words, the people who show up at the meeting are the "right people" and the topics that are discussed are the "right topics". It's a meeting for the attendees, by the attendees.

Main Topic: Tiling Window Managers

Our presenter is: Adam Lincoln

Adam will be talking about tiling window managers, focusing on four in particular: stumpwm, dwm, awesome, and larswm. Tilers have some surprising features that might make your everyday computing easier and faster. Learn about why you might want to try one, how to try one, and common issues and their solutions.

Adam is a post-doctoral researcher and adjunct faculty for Wayne State University's Department of Physics and Astronomy. He's been a full time Linux user for over 5 years, and worked for a short period doing server maintenance, zimbra installs and asterisk deployments. He co-founded the Wayne State University LUG, now serves as its advisor, and is an active member of the Ubuntu Michigan Local Community Team. He's a terminal lover, hates the mouse, and loves sending patches to obscure projects that nobody else seems to care about.

Secondary Topic: Productivity/Organizational tools

Our presenter is: Craig Maloney

It's a new year! Time to get organized and start the year off with more productivity, right? But what's out there to help you be more organized and productive? Craig will give us a brief look at some of the tools that are out there to help get you organized like JPilot, and Tracks, and discuss how to apply the Getting Things Done methodology with these tools. We'll also look at what makes a good organizational tool, and how to rethink the tools you're using to get the most out of them.

Craig currently works for Sourceforge.net. He has been using Linux since a friend of his gave him a Transameritech Slackware CD back in 1994. He enjoys juggling, playing drums, playing video games, and programming.

Main Topic: Large Linux Deployment - A Case Study

Our speaker is: Marlon F. Dutra

This month, we have a special guest from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Marlon Dutra, a Brazilian entrepreneur, has worked with information technology, especially Linux, since 1996, when the first commercial Internet service providers started operating in Brazil. Since then, he has worked with Linux/Unix servers, corporate network planning, security and IP telephony.

Marlon is a founding director at Propus Informática Ltda, a company specializing in corporate servers and IP telephony-related services. Marlon served two years as the president of FISL (International Free Software Forum), held every year in Porto Alegre, Brazil, today one of greatest free software conferences in the world.

Marlon will talk about a case study of Uninorte, the largest private university in Northern Brazil, with 23,000 students. Uninorte has about 90% of its infra-structure based on Linux, using LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project), with about 1500 thin clients, coming from 11 different buildings in the city, booting from a centralized Linux cluster, designed and implemented by Propus and specially tailored for LTSP.

100% of Uninorte's telephony is based on voice over IP, a project implemented by Propus in 2007. The solution is entirely based on the open source software Asterisk. This installation has 500+ extensions in 11 facilities, all connected through a gigabit fiber network.

Command of the month: screen

In this month's Unix Command Line session, Brad McMahon will show us how to use the screen utility.

Everything Else
As usual we'll discuss any current happenings in the Linux community, have our book giveaway, and plan on some dinner after the meeting where you can hammer our speakers with the hard hitting questions they deserve.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks.

KDE4, Kubuntu, and Fun Galore, A Evening With Richard Johnson

KDE4
Richard Johnson is going to show off the latest that the KDE project has to offer. It's definitely different, new APIs, new applications, and it all adds up to a whole new KDE. Come find out why you just might want to Kify your desktop.

Kubuntu Project
In case you hadn't heard, there's more to the world of Ubuntu, than Ubuntu. A whole series of Ubuntubased distros are out there. Last month we talked about Medibuntu last month. Richard can share some insights on the kubutu project.

Everything Else
As usual we'll discuss any current happenings in the Linux community, have our book giveaway, and plan on some dinner after the meeting where you can hammer our speakers with the hard hitting questions they deserve.

About the Speaker
Rich Johnson is a longterm member and contributor to the Ubuntu and Kubuntu project from Chicago, Illinois. In 1994, while serving in the U.S. Navy, he purchased a computer at the base PX. Upon starting it up later that day, Rich noticed the immediate issues with the modem as well as the sound card. The next day at work, he searched the Internet on "How to fix Microsoft Windows." One of the first results was the Slackware Linux distribution, at which time he downloaded to numerous floppy disks to install later at home. Now Rich hacks on Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu, and Debian GNU/Linux operating systems, as well as the awardwinning K Desktop Environment (KDE). He enjoys spending a vast majority of his free time hacking on, and spreading, freedom.

Command of the month: diff

In this month's Unix Command Line session, Bill Allie will explain what's the diff and why you might care.

Main Topic: Regular Expressions

If you look at the following:

/[A-Za-z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Za-z0-9.-]+\.[A-Za-z]{2,4}/

And think it looks like line noise, then you'll definitely want to come to the meeting to learn how to read this and other regular expressions.

On the other hand, if you look at that above regex and easily see that it's checking for a valid email address (for some definition of valid), then you should also come to the meeting. In fact, we need a few more people to help out.

We'd like to have 5 people talk about various aspects of regular expressions, from the intro level all the way to advanced level regex's.

We've already got 3 people lined up, and we're looking for 2 more. If you think you have something to share in regard to regular expressions, whether you are using sed, grep, perl, python or something else, please consider spending 10-15 minutes with the group, to show what you know.

We're expecting this to be a very interactive meeting, where everybody will learn something.

Please let us know if you can help out by sending an email to board@mug.org

debconf

Jorge Castro will be filling us in on what happened at the annual Debian Developer Conference.

Unix command line

In this months Unix Command Line session, Craig Maloney will be showing the head and tail utilities. We've found that if we allow 10 to 15 minutes to discuss a Unix/Linux command, it turns into an amazing conversation where everybody learns something new about the command, even if they've been using it for years.

NAS - rsync, nfs, smbfs

Duane Brown recently bought a NAS (Network Attached Storage) unit for his home network. He has configured it to back-up his home Linux and Windows computers using rsync and NFS. He'll show how he set it up and he'll discuss alternative methods, including smbfs.

LSB announcement

There's been some talk about the LSB (Linux Standard Base). We'll have a discussion about what this means and we'll compare this with other ideas, such as Free software release coordination as proposed by Mark Shuttleworth. Should be an interesting discussion.

Freegeek

Jim McQuillan was in Portland, Oregon a few weeks ago for the LTSP hackfest. The event was held at the Freegeek headquarters. Jim will spend a few minutes discussing the highlights of the Hackfest and then show a short video about the Freegeek organization. If you are interested in seeing how computers can be recycled, you won't want to miss this meeting.

Book giveaway

We've got 2 brand new books to give away this month. Current members have a chance to win a copy of "The Official Ubuntu Book" (including a dvd with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) or Sams Teach Yourself "PHP, MySQL, and Apache"

Main Topic: The Economics of Open Source Software pdf --or-- "Show Me the Money"

Our speaker is: David J. Scholl

Abstract
Despite the long-term financial success of a number of businesses based on Open Source Software (OSS) development, only in recent years has OSS been recognized by outside observers as an activity of economic significance. The skyrocketing IPO's of VA Linux and RedHat in 1999 were thought by some to be irrational exuberance on the part of investors, and the public claim by IBM to invest $1B in Linux in 2001 was dismissed by many as anti-Microsoft FUD. More recently, the dominant mind-share of the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl-Python-PHP) in the venture-capital space has been hard to dismiss, as has the publicly-proclaimed reliance of Google, Inc. on Linux and MySQL. The straw that has really broken the camel's back, however, is the recent public threat by Microsoft (in the pages of Fortune Magazine, no less), that Microsoft would strike out against OSS by filing patent infringement lawsuits against its own best customers. Everyone agrees that where there's smoke, there's fire (for some definition of smoke). When arguably the most successful corporation in the history of capitalism, from the heights of its market dominance and profitability, makes a public threat to sue its own best customers, even the most complacent industry observer can start to detect a whiff of burning embers.

Now that we smell the smoke, our next task is to locate the fire. It simply can't be the routine legal and regulatory hassles that appear with such frequency in the news media. Microsoft has given comfortable proof, for years now, that the profits to be accrued from disreputable corporate behavior far exceed the costs of such behavior in fines, adverse judgments, and settlements. Fortunately for us, a European economist with expertise in non-monetary transactions, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh, has been uncovering and explaining fundamental structural changes now underway in the software economy. By "showing us the money", and the new ways that economic value is flowing through the software industry, Professor Ghosh's work locates the fire that is causing such visible distress for Microsoft's management team, and that promises transformative change for creators and users of software.

Main Topic: One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)

Ivan Krstić - Director of Security Architecture for the OLPC project

Ivan's Google Tech Talk from April 12, 2007

This month we have a fantastic opportunity to see what OLPC is all about from a member of the OLPC team.

Ivan is a software architect and researcher currently on leave from Harvard University. Prior to joining OLPC, he served as director of research at the Medical Informatics Laboratory at Zagreb Children's Hospital, developing software infrastructure for wide-scale digital healthcare. He is deeply involved in open-source and free software, notably as an administrator of the Ubuntu Server Team and co-author of the best-selling Official Ubuntu Book, and specializes in architecture and security of large distributed systems. He has consulted on both matters for some of the largest websites on the Internet.

Ivan will share with us insights into the OLPC project that you just can't get anywhere else. He's prepared to tell us about the technology, security, science and anything else we want to know about the project.

Ivan is traveling from Cambridge, MA to Detroit specifically to be at our meeting. This is our chance fill the auditorium and show Ivan how strong the open source community is in south east Michigan.

PDF Announcement Download the Mp3 of the meeting

For our October meeting, we've got two awesome speakers lined up. Each an expert in their field. It should prove to be one of the best meetings yet. Read on for the details.

First Topic: Security

Our speaker is: David Schaefer

David will briefly discuss the scope of Information Assurance (IA), and how it relates to our ever changing environment in Information Technologies (IT) and business. He will lay down a foundation and stress the importance of how IA is all around us every day and used to protect us, and our data. This will be a higher level presentation to point out some of the various layers and obstacles we all need to look out for in order to protect our data. David will then journey into the final frontier of host-based hardening to discuss the common pitfalls and best practices that we can follow as hobbyists and professionals in securing UNIX, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. During the presentation, he will point out some free tools/procedures that can be used to help us audit/benchmark, and lock down host-based systems to help your computers to live long and prosperous lives while staying free of any bad cling-ons.

David Schaefer is a Desktop Support Supervisor at Oakland Community College. David has over 9 years of experience in the education industry, and has held the roles from Desktop Support Specialist to Network Information Systems Professional. David has an MBA with a specialization of Information Assurance (IA) and a BBA with a concentration in Computer Information Systems (CIS) from Walsh College.

Second Topic: DRM -- A Fiasco, Stuffed in a Debacle, and Wrapped up in a Blunder

Our speaker is: David J. Scholl

The Internet, as a collective machine composed of millions of computers interconnected for high-speed data transfer, can copy and distribute text, audio, and video on a scale that would have been unimaginable even half a century ago. Thanks to this modern-day genie, writers, musicians, and actors in even the narrowest of artistic niches can maintain a world-wide fan base, making and distributing digital copies of their work at negligible cost. Unfortunately, just as wishes granted by genies in ancient fables had unintended consequences, so too does this gift from the modern-day genie. Copyright infringement, the making of an illegal copy of an artistic work without payment to or permission from the owner, is now as easy as a click-and-drag with a mouse. In fact, the ease and near-anonymity of such copying has led to widespread tolerance toward copyright infringement in our society. In response, the corporations who profit from selling digital copies of artistic works are trying to use technical measures known as Digital Rights Management (DRM) to put the Internet genie halfway back into its bottle. The talk will review the most spectacular DRM-related failure ever to occur in the recording industry, the technical reasons why DRM has never worked and almost certainly never will, and how the industry's current obsession with DRM is actually hastening its deterioration in the entertainment marketplace. Finally, there will be speculation about upcoming developments in DRM, which might lead to either (unlikely) the ultimate victory for DRM, or (probably) the end of DRM in our lifetime.

Main Topic: RPATH Makes Appliances Easy

The September meeting is shaping up quite nicely. rPath, using the Conary build system is a very hot technology and we've got a couple of the actual engineers that designed it to fly from their offices in North Carolina to spend some time with us, to show us what it's all about and to answer any questions we might have. This is a meeting you shouldn't miss, and please tell all your friends about it too. -Jim McQuillan-

Michael K. Johnson and Ken VanDine will present rPath's technology, from top to bottom. They will demonstrate building an appliance, and then explain how you can build and maintain your own complete OS -- as well as why you might want to!

They will describe and demonstrate how the tools work, both from a developer and from an end-user perspective. They will describe how the tools that rPath has created make it possible first to easily create a small operating system image that supports an application -- and then make updates to that operating system robust, and ongoing maintenance easy.

They encourage questions, and will be happy to spend time afterwards going into even more detail after they exceed their allotted one and a half hours.

Michael K. Johnson was one of the original Linux hackers. He cut his kernel chops re-writing the parallel port driver and turning the /proc filesystem into something capable of supporting all the features of ps -- and then some. He managed the tsx-11.mit.edu FTP site, built low-level tools for kernel interfaces, and ported Emacs to Linux before he learned to love vi. He was the editor of Linux Journal for its first two years. He then joined Red Hat as a member of the operating system development team, where he wrote configuration tools and maintained many packages, then ran Red Hat's kernel team until he founded the Fedora project and guided it through its first release.

In 2004, Michael left Red Hat, joining with Matt Wilson and Erik Troan to design the Conary software management system that is the core of all rPath technology. At rPath, he is responsible for the development of Conary and rPath Linux.

Ken VanDine, now an Engineering Lead at rPath, was the founder (in 2005) and is the project leader of the Foresight Linux Project. His work with the Foresight Linux Project and Conary software management system led Ken to work for rPath, based in Raleigh, N.C.

Ken has been involved with Open Source technology as an avid Linux user and Systems Administrator since 1993. He worked with Linux while enlisted in the United States Air Force and while employed by software companies and a few dot-coms. During those years he gained extensive experience packaging, maintaining, and deploying software for Linux. After working with a number of package management systems, Ken started using Conary, which solved many of challenges he previously experienced with legacy package management technologies.

As a member of the GNOME Marketing team, Ken has written articles for the GNOME Journal (http://www.gnomejournal.org) and is now the maintainer of the GNOME LiveCD, based on Foresight Linux and available at http://torrents.gnome.org

In response, the corporations who profit from selling digital copies of artistic works are trying to use technical measures known as Digital Rights Management (DRM) to put the Internet genie halfway back into its bottle. eDiscovery, Intrusion detection, and stories from an FBI Special Agent

Our speaker is: Richard Rytman Managing director of Technical Services and Legal Counsel at Veritas Global.

Mr. Rytman will talk to us about something called eDiscovery and changes in the law, where it is going, how it will effect corporate compliance and/or document retention policies as it relates to electronically stored information (ESI), and the problems that will naturally be associated with the rule. He'll offer recommendations on how to avoid the pitfalls, or at least minimize the nuisance level, caused by the rule and its implementation by lawyers and judges with little to no IT background.

Additionally, He'll cover computer intrusion crimes, or hacking, including best practices for defending against a hacker/virus/worm etc. He'll ask (and hopefully answer) the following questions:

  • If your system is hacked, do you know what to do?
  • What procedures and policies are in place to deal with the situation that will best minimize loss but also preserve evidence at the same time?
  • Under what circumstances should you contact law enforcement (which one and who) and what to expect if you do (i.e., the whole legal process involved from A to Z).
  • Do you have a duty to report a hacker?

Finally, if there's still time at the end, he'll share some war stories from his time with the FBI and give us a chance to ask some questions.

About the speaker:

Mr. Rytman is a former Special Agent with the FBI. He is a certified Technical Trained Agent (TTA), a small select group of highly trained agents whose responsibilities include supporting case agents in the field through the use and deployment of a variety of sensitive electronic surveillance equipment and methods via covert technical operations.

Prior to being selected for the TTA program, Mr. Rytman was the lead investigator for the Cyber Crimes Squad in the State of Michigan. His primary areas of responsibility included investigating federal computer intrusion crimes and presenting to various computer security groups, business executives and system administrators on the topic of computer security and related legal issues. He helped form the first cyber crime squad in Detroit and successfully investigated many complex computer intrusion crimes on both a national and international level.

While at the FBI Mr. Rytman was also a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, where he was responsible for gathering intelligence and building complex criminal cases against various terrorist organizations operating within the United States.

Mr. Rytman was also a certified legal advisor and firearms instructor for the FBI and has served as a member of the Detroit FBI SWAT Team. He also served in the United States Navy in the intelligence arena as well as in the United States Army Reserves as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader.

Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Rytman was an Assistant District Attorney. He is a member of both the Wisconsin and Michigan State Bar.

That's an awful lot of stuff to cover in one meeting, so we'll need to make sure we get started on time. I think this is a unique opportunity for us to get an inside look at the legalities and intricacies of the industry that we're all a part of, from someone who's got the experience to talk about it.

John Terpstra

For this meeting, we're bringing in special guest John Terpstra.

John H Terpstra works with AMD in the cross platform group focusing on digital media solutions. His key interest is to enable the delivery of delightful media entertainment on open source platforms.

John is a well known contributor and visionary in the open source community who has an active commercial focus. He is co-founder of the Samba-Team, and a member of the Open Source Software Institute Advisory Board. He has worked with the LSB, Li18nux (now OpenI18N.Org), is a best selling author of "The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide", "Samba-3 by Example", "Hardening Linux" and has other books in production.

Prior to joining AMD John worked with The SCO Group (previously Caldera Inc.), and TurboLinux Inc., in VP level positions.

John will be with us for the whole evening, and he's agreed to give us 2 presentations:

  1. Samba3 Update: Recent changes and their impact, reviewing the changes in 3.0.20 through 3.0.25. How to take advantage of recent developments.

  2. Demonstration of an AMD multi-media concept platform. The machine that he will demonstrate is a concept model for future technology developments. John mentioned that this hardware was "rough around the edges", so it should be loads of fun. A brief overview will be given of the challenges that are being addressed to create new entertainment experiences.

Jim's note: I've known John for a long time, and I've seen him speak on numerous occasions. He's really a great speaker. He's extremely knowledgeable in both topics and he's able to share with us his passion for the technology. You really shouldn't miss this meeting.

Main Topic: Mark Shuttleworth

Jim McQuillan will be in Seville, Spain From May 2nd through the 12th, for the Ubuntu Education Summit (UES) and the Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS). We'll be doing a live remote MUG presentation from Seville. This will be live 2-way interactive Audio AND Video. We've worked out the technology and we're pretty sure that we are ready to give this a try.

Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu founder and Cosmonaut) has agreed to take part in this presentation. He'll talk about Ubuntu, Space and whatever else he pleases. This'll be a great chance to ask him some questions.

In addition to Mark, we'll have some other Ubuntu developers, and we'll pick their brains about what's coming up in the next release of Ubuntu, the process that the Ubuntu team uses to create a release, and maybe they'll tell us a bit about the deal with Dell agreeing to bundle Ubuntu Linux on some of their desktop and laptop computers.

Keep in mind that Spain is 6 hours ahead of Detroit, so it'll be very late there when we hook up and do the presentation. We hope to get Mark's part of the session going quickly, so please try to be at the meeting BEFORE 6:30pm next Tuesday.

This will be the first time we've tried doing a remote session with video. It's impossible to tell how the audio and video quality will be, until we actually get there and do it. We'll be testing the connection very well before the meeting, so hopefully, we'll have it all tuned up perfectly, and everything will come out great.

This should be a great meeting and it will give us a chance to show that the Metro Detroit area has a strong technological group. One that we can all be proud of.

Additional Topic: PostgreSQL 8.2 what's new

Our speaker is: Billy G. Allie

Bill has given many MUG presentations over the years, this month we're happy to have him give us a review of what is new in PostgreSQL 8.2.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks.

Main Topic: Mail Server setup and configuration, with SPAM filtering

Our speakers are Bill Allie, and Rick Harding

Spam has become a huge problem, clogging up our inboxes and the internet as a whole. there are estimates that 80-90 percent of all email is unwanted, unsolicited junk mail (spam). there's a number of ways to combat this problem. Our first speaker, Bill Allie has recently rebuilt his Linux based mail server and is going to tell us about setting up a basic mail server with SPAM and virus filtering using postfix (why postfix and not sendmail, he'll tell us), greylisting and sagator: http://www.salstar.sk/sagator/.

His goal was to stem the flow of junk mail (both SPAM and viruses) that his server had to handle. He'll discuss what he did to filter out the junk using open source tools. The discussion will cover the selection and configuring of the Mail Transport Agent (MTA), how to limit spam using SMTP policies, header restrictions, spam filtering software, and virus blocking software.

Rick Harding will add his input on using amavisd as the filtering end of the solution as well as some information on tweaking spamassassin.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks.

Election for MUG board of directors in February!

It's time once again for the election of the members of the board of directors of the Michigan!/usr/group. Nominations are now being accepted and the election will be held at the February 13th regular MUG meeting.

The current board members are:

  • Jim McQuillan
  • Dick Williams
  • Duane Brown
  • David Satwicz
  • Jorge Castro
  • Jim Glutting

There are 6 positions on the board, and every year, we hold the election to choose who the members will be for the coming year.

Board members are expected to be available for a monthly face-to-face board meeting and also to participate in email discussions to help facilitate upcoming MUG meetings and handle MUG business.

If you'd like to really help out, or you know someone who you think would make a great board member, speak up and nominate that person.

Main Topic: Collaborative Development

Our moderator is: Jim McQuillan

Many of us have been in the position of needing to work on a document or program with other people either locally or geographically dispersed. This month we'll be having a discussion about the various tools and technologies to make collaborative development easier. This could be One-on-One, or there may be many people involved in the collaboration. For this meeting, we'll be primarily focused on the small team of 2 people collaborating over the internet.

  • communications
    • Voip
    • IRC
    • Instant Messaging
    • group meeting tools (FOSS tools to work with or replace netmeeting)

  • sharing
    • screen
    • vnc
    • Gobby

  • editors
    • vim
    • ACE is a platform-independent, collaborative text editor. It is a real-time cooperative editing system
    • DocSynch is a collaborative editing system on top of IRC
    • Gobby - A free collaborative editor supporting multiple documents in one session and a multi-user chat
    • MoonEdit is a multi-platform collaborative text editor

  • document/code management
    • cvs
    • subversion
    • Bazaar

We won't have the time to go into depth in every item in the above list, but we'll cover whatever we can. We expect this to be a highly interactive meeting, so if you have ideas of your own, for how to deal with collaboration, show up and tell us about it.

Secondary Topic: GIMP

Gibson Nichols will be talking about GIMP.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks. Such as a small presentation on one of our Office Infrastructure topics, like mail or ldap.

Maybe someone whom we didn't get to or who wanted to tell us more.

Main Topic: Linux Powered Office Infrastructure

Here is the situation. Someone that you know, your brother-in-law, your cousin, your minister, your ...., well someone, wants to setup a back office computing operation for a small business, or an organization, or something. They know that you are a computer expert. They ask you what to do.

You, being completely committed to open software and not being quick enough to have hidden, want to respond with a complete solution. What do you do?

What functions might they need? What software should you install to meet those needs? Then how do you setup those software systems and how do you administer them? Don't worry about money. There is none. You will be using mostly hand-me-down hardware and only new store-bought-stuff if absolutely necessary and if the price is low.

An introduction to the various components with a chance for feedback, to get an idea of what our membership would like to hear more about at future meetings.

It has been mentioned that we could try to actually install and configure parts of this. There seems to be far too many things in our solution to install anything during the meeting. If anyone wants guidance with selection, installation, setup and administration of these parts bring it up and I'm sure someone will be more than glad to help.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is a requirement, where possible.

We started this exercise at the October and November meetings with discussions to identify the required functions and the software candidates to fulfill those requirements. At the December meeting we will give a brief introduction to each of them and may try to actually install and configure as much as we can. There will probably be far too many things in our 'Back Office' solution to install them during the meeting.

If there is interest we may have presentations on installation and configuration of the various pieces of the Linux Powered Office Infrastructure at future meetings.

Main Topic: The State of Wine

Our speaker is: Jeremy White.

Jeremy is the founder and CEO of CodeWeavers, the primary corporate supporter of the Wine Project. Wine allows applications written for the Windows (tm) operating system to run (unmodified) on Linux. For those of you stuck in the land of windows, this can be a great way to run your favorite operating system and still be able to run those required applications that normally require a Windows machine.

Jeremy has been using Linux since the mid 90's, and involved with the Wine project since the late 90s. He lives in St. Paul, MN, where he spends most of his time goofing with his kids (when he isn't playing World of Warcraft with his wife, that is <grin>).

Jeremy will report on the State of Wine. That will include a brief technical overview, an overview of flavors of Wine and how to get them. Then he'll talk about recent progress, where Wine is going, and what it does well right now. And, of course, there will be cool demos.

We've asked Jeremy to reserve some time at the end of his talk, to answer questions. He's involved in all kinds of Linux desktop related activities so if you have questions, bring them to the meeting and let's see what Jeremy has to say.

Secondary Topic: "Smart Office" Planning

We'll spend 20-30 minutes planning the December meeting. We're looking for topics and volunteers willing to give a 5-10 minute introduction to the technology that they would use in a Linux/Opensource/freesoftware office infrastructure.

More details available at Meeting-20061212

T-Shirts and Polos

We'll have our stock of MUG.org T-Shirts and Polos at the November meeting. The T's go for $10 each and the Polos are $20 each. But, if you are a paid member, you can get $5 off your first T-shirt and your first Polo. Such a deal.

Main Topic: The Linux Crystal Ball

Our speaker is: Marcel Gagne

Gather around and gaze into Marcel's Linux crystal ball for a peek at the future. What's going on? What does it mean? Where are we all going? And what is it going to be like when we get there? All that and some cool desktop demos.

Marcel is an award-winning author and columnist, probably best known for his Cooking with Linux column which appears monthly in Linux Journal. His best-selling Moving to Linux: Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye! (now in its second edition) is the premier guide for those wishing to take the plunge into desktop Linux. His first book was the acclaimed Linux System Administration: A User's Guide. His most recent book is Moving to the Linux Business Desktop. As if that's not enough, he's written numerous articles on Linux and Open source projects for various publications including Linux Journal, InformIT, Unix Review, SysAdmin magazine and several others. He also appears regularly on radio and on TV as the Linux guy on Tech TV's Call for Help.

If you've been missing MUG meetings lately, this meeting will be a great opportunity for you to get caught-up with what's going on in the world of Linux and Free software. In fact, this is also a great chance for you to bring a friend, to introduce them to the idea that we have a choice in what we run on our computers.

Secondary Topic: Linux Powered Office Infrastructure

For our December 12th meeting, we'll be devoting the entire evening to demos and discussions of a complete Free Software back-office suite. So, for the October meeting, we'll start the planning for this. If you have a favorite Free/Open Source technology that you find useful in your business/home/school, such as Webservers, Databases, Mail servers and anything else, then bring it up during our second topic, and we can get it added into the schedule for December.

FREE STUFF

We still have books to give out that Jim Glutting brought back from Linux World.
Duane also picked up a couple of shirts from the Ohio LinuxFest and a copy of "The Offical Ubuntu Book" with DVD (release 6.06 LTS) which he's decided to give away.

You must be a member to win one of these valuable prizes

MUG T-Shirts and Polos

The MUG T-Shirts and Polo shirts are in and they turned out awesome. In fact, they came in just in time for the Ohio Linux Fest in Columbus, where a whole bunch of us got to show our MUG spirit . We'll have the shirts for sale at the October meeting. The prices are extremely reasonable too. The T's are $10/each and the Polos are $20/each. BUT, paid members will get a $5 discount on their first T-Shirt and also on their first Polo. They can buy additional shirts at the regular price.

These shirts are going to go fast, so be the first on your block to have one (or more).

 <<O>>  Difference Topic WebHome (r1.30 - 30 Jul 2006 - DuaneBrown)

Welcome to the home of the Michigan!/usr/group

We are the oldest Unix(tm) based user group in the Detroit area. We've been around since 1986. But, that doesn't mean that we are old farts. (well, some of us are). We've got lots of members, and we cover all kinds of Unix and Linux related topics at our monthly meetings.

First Topic: Backup PC

Flavio DaCosta will tell us about BackupPC. From their website "BackupPC is a high-performance, enterprise-grade system for backing up Linux and WinXX PCs and laptops to a server's disk. BackupPC is highly configurable and easy to install and maintain."

The current version is 2.1.2 released on September 5th, 2005 and updated to 2.1.2pl2 (patch level 2) released on June 18th, 2006

Second Topic: MONO

Jay Wren will tell us about mono. From the Mono website: Mono, the open source development platform based on the .NET framework, allows developers to build Linux and cross-platform applications with improved developer productivity. Mono's .NET implementation is based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Infrastructure.

Sponsored by Novell, the Mono project has an active and enthusiastic contributing community. Mono includes both developer tools and the infrastructure needed to run .NET client and server applications. It is positioned to become the leading choice for development of Linux applications.

Mono includes compilers, an ECMA-compatible runtime engine (the Common Language Runtime, or CLR), and many libraries. The libraries include Microsoft .NET compatibility libraries (including ADO.NET, System.Windows.Forms and ASP.NET), Mono's own and third party class libraries. Gtk#, a set of .NET bindings for the gtk+ toolkit and assorted GNOME libraries can be found in the latter. This library allows you to build fully native Gnome application using Mono and includes support for user interfaces built with the Glade interface builder. Furthermore, Mono's runtime can be embedded into applications for simplified packaging and shipping. In addition, the Mono project offers an IDE, Debugging, and a documentation browser.

Under the hood, Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages...
