Welcome to the home of the Michigan!/usr/group

We are the oldest Unix(tm) based user group in the Detroit area. We've been around since 1986. But, that doesn't mean that we are old farts. (well, some of us are). We've got lots of members, and we cover all kinds of Unix and Linux related topics at our monthly meetings.

Next Meeting:

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

First Topic: zsh - Rick Harding

From Wikipedia: "The Z shell (zsh) is a Unix shell that can be used as an interactive login shell and as a powerful command interpreter for shell scripting. Zsh can be thought of as an extended Bourne shell with a large number of improvements, including some features of bash, ksh, and tcsh."

This month, MUG's own Rick Harding will be showing us all kinds of cool features in what has become his favorite shell.

Main Topic: LMMS - Linux Multi-Media Studio

While prepping for a talk about what he used to create music under Linux, Craig fired up a program that he hadn't used in years. What he saw blew his little mind, and now he's on a rampage to share his findings. That program is LMMS, and it will hopefully blow your mind in this presentation.

LMMS is a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL StudioŽ, which allow you to produce music with your computer. This includes the creation of melodies and beats, the synthesis and mixing of sounds, and arranging of samples. You can have fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more; all in a user-friendly and modern interface.

MUG member Craig Maloney will be giving us a thoroughly entertaining and informative presentation on the LMMS project.

Command of the month: ps

In this month's Unix Command Line session, Duane Brown will tell us how he uses ps and seek insights into how you use it. ( rescheduled from last month due to time constraints )

Everything Else
As usual we'll discuss any current happenings in the Linux community, have our book giveaway, and plan on some dinner after the meeting where you can hammer our speakers with the hard hitting questions they deserve.

If you have topics for future meetings you would like us to cover please email the board, thanks.
