Wires, Guards, and Netflix

In the tech world, VPNs are nothing new. With Netflix talking about locking down on account sharing, folks who might otherwise not know WiFi from Ethernet are trying to figure out how their college students can still use Netflix from their dorm rooms.

VPNs have historically been either terribly insecure (PPTP is a pretty ugly CHAP, for instance), or incredibly challenging to set up (port forward much, L2TP/IPSec?!?). Wireguard changes that. In fact, Wireguard is so simple, it's basically like setting up an SSH connection, but with real layer 2 networking. Yes, it's sorta possible to set up a VPN with SSH (or sshuttle), but it's not really a VPN, and it's not really easy.

If you add tailscale, Wireguard makes VPN pretty easy to set up -- but what's great is that complexity aside, Wireguard is also a rock solid, low overhead, highly performant VPN. And that is what I'll demonstrate. :)

Shawn Powers has been a Linux sysadmin for several decades, but is best known for his time as a contributing editor at Linux Journal. Most of his DayJobs have revolved around education, working as a Tech Director for a K12 school, Database Manager at a Cornerstone University, and as a trainer for CBT Nuggets. At the end of the day, however, he's just an old Linux nerd who manages servers in the nerdiest way possible.

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more!
